A little while ago we wrapped up our space unit. This was a unit that I taught last year and of course I had to do it again! The kids really get into learning about the planets and I can’t say I blame them! Teaching with themes is particularly great because it makes it SO easy to teach outside the box.
We started by learning each of the planets and some facts about them. I love to explain to my students that I don’t know everything (my boyfriend would get a kick out of that!). It is important for kids to understand that they are in charge of their own learning. When we are not sure of something or want to learn more—we need to do research! Every unit I teach I do research to learn new things. Not only do I learn new things to teach my kiddos--my parents learn too! One of the best compliments that I have gotten is from a parent who was blown away by the knowledge and vocabulary their child was learning in my class.
I always have books tied to our theme on a small bookshelf in the front of our classroom. These books may be fiction or nonfiction! This is a target area for kids to learn information during Read to Self. We also use these books when charting new information together or on individual graphic organizers (I prefer to use Deanna Jump's graphic organizers--you can find her blog HERE).
Poetry is another great thing to add to any unit. Each week I introduce a new poem that relates to our theme. We echo read it and then choral read it together. This is the perfect time to model reading fluently!!! Students also are required to illustrate their poem.
